The Day I Became a Millionaire!

The second day of my trip to Zambia and Zimbabwe I became a millionaire! I was walking the littered streets of Vic Falls, the border town next to the exquisite Victoria Falls, when I noticed a scrap on the ground that looked like money! It was all crumpled and dirty and smelly, but sure enough, it was a 500 million dollar bill!! I'm rich! Not quite. Someone had wisely used this worthless bill as toilet paper! Claims to Shame: Zimbabwe's education system, once one of the best in Africa, has disintegrated over the past year. Towards the end of 2007, 85% of children were ...

Singing in the Rain

"His ways are not our ways, his thoughts are not our thoughts. In September '07 we started construction on a spec house, something we hadn't done for at least 10 years.  Upon completion in December, we put it on the market, hopeful that the proceeds would allow us to pay off some debt and live in Africa for a period of time. We didn't realize that the economy was taking a nosedive, with housing sales coming to a virtual standstill over the course of 2008.  Despite the continued prayers of many people, that beautiful house crafted with such high expectations remained ...

Confessions of a Pharisee

As I unsuspectingly opened my Bible for my morning devotions, my selection fell on Matt 19 –the Pharisees (thank God I am not like them!) confronting Jesus about divorce. As my eyes scanned down the page, something began to swim in my mind: Instead of hearing the words of insipid enemies of Jesus, I was hearing my own taunts, my own reasonings, a very familiar method of critiquing new teachings. For several months before this I had been engaged in a debate with a pastor friend who had become convinced of evolution. He is well read, articulate, intelligent, ...

Incarnation – the most precious gift of all.

Today I am trying to cheer myself for Jesus' sake. I am feeling lonely and blue, because my children and friends are in a distant country on this Christmas day. But perhaps there is something I can learn from this... What is Christmas all about, other than the miracle of incarnation? Such extreme holiness condescended to the lowest level, not just for a moment, but to live among those who were hopelessly degraded and perverse, and even to die with them. When we walk in the townships here - see the anger and aggression, the neglect of children, the stench of waste in ...

BELOVED

We left amid a flurry of packing and goodbyes to those-we-love-the-most, and here we are in Cape Town, beginning the adventure again. I tagged along with Missy and Michelle yesterday, buying rice and sardines, spinach and soap, then separating it all into food parcels for selected needier families in Masiphumelele. It’s all about sustainability, but in some cases a hand-out seems the only answer. We visited in the home of one recipient, Nofirst, possibly 40 years old. It’s hard to guess ages here—we had to ask to determine if the five-month old on her back was ...

“Live openly and expansively…”

So, here is what I would like to have as my first post: a tribute to the unusual sense of freedom and enjoyment of life God has for us. Nothin' better than swimming with dolphins, right? FREEDOM! Paul said it like this to the Corinthian believers (according to Eugene Peterson) "I can't tell you how much I long for you to enter this wide-open, spacious life. We didn't fence you in. The smallness you feel comes from within you. Your lives aren't small, buy you're living them in a small way. I'm speaking as plainly as I can and with great affection. Open up your lives. Live ...
